What happened
Stemirac is an autologous bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem-cell product for selected traumatic spinal-cord injuries. It received conditional and time-limited approval in 2018, followed by post-marketing data collection. The committee endorsed full approval on 15 October 2026 and the minister announced the outcome the next day.
Why it matters
According to the ministry, this is expected to be Japan’s first regenerative medical product to move from conditional/time-limited approval to full approval, testing the complete regulatory pathway from early access to post-marketing reassessment.
Who may be eligible
Earlier PMDA documents limited use to traumatic spinal-cord injury with ASIA impairment grades A, B or C, with bone-marrow collection generally within 31 days of injury. It is not a general-purpose stem-cell infusion and requires specialised facilities, timing and clinical assessment.
Avoid overpromising
Reported cases of functional improvement do not guarantee that every patient will regain walking. Injury level, severity, timing, rehabilitation and complications all affect outcomes. International access may be constrained by the early collection window and facility requirements.
What to watch next
The formal approval notice, updated package insert, optimal-use guidance and detailed post-marketing evidence should be reviewed before making patient-access claims.
