Study purpose
Meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown origin (MUO) is a progressive immune-mediated neurological disorder seen particularly in young small-breed dogs. Standard management commonly uses corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive drugs. This study evaluates tolerability and potential efficacy of adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs).
Key eligibility groups
- Newly diagnosed dogs that have not started immunosuppressive treatment
- Dogs already treated but unable to taper corticosteroids
- Eligibility is decided by the university team after enquiry or examination
Costs and attendance
The university states that the MSC product itself is not charged because efficacy and safety are not fully known. IV administration, hospitalisation, follow-up examinations and laboratory testing are charged as ordinary clinical care. A pre-treatment visit is generally required.
Cross-border practicality
MUO often requires prompt neurology care and repeated follow-up. Travel solely to try a stem-cell study should not delay local MRI, cerebrospinal-fluid testing, infectious-disease exclusion or initial treatment. Cross-border participation is reasonable to consider only after record review suggests eligibility and transport and follow-up are feasible.
Limitations
This is not an established treatment proven superior to immunosuppression. Limited case reports do not guarantee efficacy or safe corticosteroid withdrawal.
