What was studied
Blood from five healthy dogs was stored at room temperature or under refrigeration for 2–72 hours. White cells and platelets were relatively more stable at room temperature, while red-cell-related values were more stable when refrigerated. Adding EDTA-2K at 3 mg/mL reduced some time-related variability.
Why it matters
The aim was to identify conditions for using fresh canine blood in external quality assessment of veterinary laboratory equipment.
For international referrals
- Retain collection time, units, reference intervals and laboratory details.
- Do not compare results from different countries without checking units and methods.
- The receiving hospital may need to repeat clinically important tests.
