Osaka University states that Shimon Sakaguchi received the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of regulatory T cells (Treg), which restrain excessive immune responses. Treg biology is central to autoimmunity, allergy, transplantation and cancer immunology.
Why cancer researchers care
Within tumors, regulatory immune mechanisms can reduce anti-tumor immune activity. This is one reason Treg biology matters to cancer research—and also a reminder that “boosting immunity” is not a simple universal strategy.
