What was created
The team induced testicular somatic cells from XY mouse pluripotent stem cells and combined them with germ-cell precursors to build testis organoids with seminiferous-tubule-like structures in vitro.
How function was tested
Spermatogonial stem cells from the organoids were expanded, transplanted and used to obtain sperm. Fertilisation with those sperm produced healthy mouse offspring. This is a substantial proof of concept, but it included transplantation and assisted fertilisation.
Long-term significance
The model may help study sex determination, testis development, spermatogenesis and reproductive toxicity. Translation to humans will require extensive further validation.
