When referral becomes urgent
Markedly fast or difficult breathing, fainting or sudden loss of exercise tolerance warrants prompt contact with a local veterinarian or emergency service. Japanese university and specialist centres differ in scope: some provide medicine, imaging and selected surgery, while others advertise open-heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.
Records to prepare
- Referral letter and medication list
- Echocardiography, thoracic radiographs, ECG and laboratory data
- Resting respiratory rate, videos of cough or syncope, weight trend
- The purpose: medical management, surgical assessment or second opinion
International travel is a separate pathway
A hospital appointment does not authorise entry into Japan. Microchip identification, rabies vaccination, antibody testing, government certification and advance notification may apply. Check Japan's Animal Quarantine Service.
